Nation of Flags | 旗帜之国

Inkjet Print and Photo Transfer on paper

9.3”x13.1” each

2021

After I came back to China, I was shocked by the amount of national flags that were displayed in public spaces. The flags are everywhere. But people are so used to it that they won’t notice it. So I collected the national flags I saw in daily life, cut them out from their surroundings, photo-transfered them into disintegrated mini flags, and made a profile for each one of them. The profiles are stored in the kind of envelope that we use for personal identity profile in China.

Do the flags have to be there? What will be different if the flags are removed? What is the relationship between our own identity and the identity that these abstract flags stand for?
